Role of YUFA Stewards in Their Groups

16 May 11

Article 4.3 of the Constitution: “Stewards shall, inter alia, represent the interests of the members of their constituent department(s)/unit(s), be responsible for advising and guiding the members of their constituent department(s)/unit(s) in the preparation and processing of complaints and grievances according to the terms of the Collective Agreement, and participate in organizing activities of the Association as required.”

  • familiarize yourself with the Collective Agreement;

  • poll members on important issues that will be discussed at Stewards‘ Council

  • keep Stewards’ Council informed about the views of members in your group* about important union issues;

  • regularly inform members of your group* of issues and information from the monthly Stewards’ Council meetings;

  • discuss bargaining priorities with members of your group*;

  • assist members to resolve problems on an informal, collegial basis;

  • assist members to access information about work at York University;

  • familiarize new faculty with YUFA, and ensure that they have received the Collective Agreement and the unit Tenure & Promotion standards;

  • bring potential grievances or violations of the Collective Agreement to the attention of the Chief Stewards and/or YUFA staff;

  • exercise discretion and maintain confidentiality.

In general, stewards function in a collegial manner between all members of their group, Stewards’ Council, and YUFA. Stewards do not initiate grievances or complaints with the Employer; that responsibility falls to the Chief Stewards. If you have any questions about how to handle an issue, please contact the YUFA office for assistance

*Stewards elected by a group of more than one unit have a responsibility to represent and communicate with and for all of their constituents.
