Role of YUFA Stewards in Their Groups

Article 4.3 of the
Constitution: “Stewards shall, inter alia, represent the interests of
the members of their constituent department(s)/unit(s), be responsible
for advising and guiding the members of their constituent department(s)/unit(s)
in the preparation and processing of complaints and grievances according
to the terms of the Collective Agreement, and participate in organizing
activities of the Association as required.”

familiarize
yourself with the Collective Agreement;

poll members on
important issues that will be discussed at Stewards‘ Council
-
keep Stewards’
Council informed about the views of members in your group* about
important union issues;

regularly
inform members of your group* of issues and information from the
monthly Stewards’ Council meetings;

discuss
bargaining priorities with members of your group*;
-
assist members
to resolve problems on an informal, collegial basis;

assist members
to access information about work at York University;
-
familiarize new
faculty with YUFA, and ensure that they have received the Collective
Agreement and the unit Tenure & Promotion standards;
-
bring potential
grievances or violations of the Collective Agreement to the
attention of the Chief Stewards and/or YUFA staff;
-
exercise
discretion and maintain confidentiality.
In general, stewards
function in a collegial manner between all members of their group,
Stewards’ Council, and YUFA. Stewards do not initiate grievances or
complaints with the Employer; that responsibility falls to the Chief
Stewards. If you have any questions about how to handle an issue, please

*Stewards elected by a group of more
than one unit have a responsibility to represent and communicate with
and for all of their constituents. |
