2002 Merit Committee Procedures

6 Oct 03 - The following accounts describe the procedures that merit committees in various Faculties followed in the 2002 exercise. It should go without saying that these accounts do not imply that those who helped compile them approve of merit pay, whether in principle or in practice. Instead, the intention is to show some of the varied ways in which merit committees have arrived at their recommendations to Deans.

Because the procedures a Faculty / College / Library adopts are pretty much up to the discretion of its YUFA members and because the procedures seem to differ considerably from one Faculty to another, those who are elected to their Faculty's merit committee(s) in 2003 might find some precedents for ways in which their own procedures might be improved.

Descriptions of 2002 Merit Committee Procedures in other units would be very welcome. If you or a YUFA colleague wish to submit an account of your unit's 2002 Merit Committee Procedures, please contact Jay Rahn (jayrahn@yorku.ca or 416-736-5236) by Friday, October 10. To provide guidance for the 2003 Merit Committees, YUFA plans to post these on this page of the website before this year's merit committees begin to assess members' applications (i.e., before October 15).

In the meantime, thanks to Jay Rahn, Ellie Perkins, Arthur Hilliker, Bridget Stutchbury, Robert Simms, Keith Aldridge and Wojtek Janczak for their help in compiling the following descriptions of 2002 Merit Committee Procedures.
