Association Of Retired
Faculty & Librarians 16 Feb 11 – The Association of Retired Faculty & Librarians of York University (ARFL) is an organization devoted to lobbying for, developing, and safeguarding a wide range of matters that are of crucial interest to retired faculty members and librarians. ARFL acts on behalf of all these retirees but receives its financial support from voluntary annual membership dues. There are two classes of membership: (1) Full Membership is for those who are retired or are retiring in the course of a given financial year of the Association (30 June -1 July); the fee for a full membership is currently $25.00 a year. (2) Associate Membership is for pre-retirement members of YUFA who are within two or three years of retiring and who would like to start tuning in on ARFL’s take on retirement issues and affairs as they effect retired librarians and faculty members; the annual fee for an Associate Membership is currently $10.00. Associate members receive the ARFL Newsletters and are full voting members of the Association's two annual general meetings. Membership fees should be addressed to: The Treasurer, ARFL,
Barry Loughton, 416 736 2100 ext. 66643 ARFL is officially affiliated with YUFA, whose negotiations with the University Administration on behalf of retirees – and future retirees – take in a wide range of matters, including medical and dental benefits, terms of post-retirement teaching, and survivors' benefits. ARFL is not a union; YUFA is the "bargaining agent" for retired faculty and librarians, and is scrupulous in soliciting ARFL's opinion and advice on matters that retirees would like to have on the table when it comes to negotiating with the Administration. The President of ARFL is a full voting member of the YUFA Executive. ARFL also enjoys cordial relations with the York University Retirees Association (YURA), which is open to all York retirees whatever their pre-retirement affiliations. A considerable number of retired faculty members and librarians belong to both ARFL and YURA. A cautionary note to faculty members and librarians who are planning to retire (1) out-of-province (that is, in a Canadian province other than Ontario); (2) in the United States; or (3) elsewhere abroad: it is extremely important to enquire carefully from York's department of Human Resources what bearing these plans will have on your medical and dental benefits. |
