Report on the Toronto District Labour Council
meeting of February 6, 2003 Penni Stewart, YUFA representative to
the TDLC Urgent appeals from OPEIU and OPSEU OPEIU local 343 Presentation by door to
door canvassers. Employees of Greenpeace have been locked out with 14
months to go on their current CA. Workers appealed to LC members to
boycott Greenpeace until the lockout is resolved. OPSEU Day of action. Presentation by
professional hospital workers appealing to members to join a picket line
on February 13th. Pickets are up at 7am at 525 University Ave. There is
also a solidarity picket at noon along the university row . OPSEU is
staging this unprecedented action hoping to get the employer, the Ontario
Hospitals Association, back to the bargaining table. These workers, who
have no right to strike, have been trying to negotiate a contract for the
past 10 months. Other Presentations/Motions Black History Month.
A presentation by Beverly Johnson outlined the history of the
Coalition of Black trade Unionists a coalition to support black workers
and to raise their union profiles. Ontario is the only Canadian Chapter of
this Union. Rebuilding Education in Ontario.
A presentation by OSSTF/OECTA members of the Education Committee
outlined the dimensions of the disaster that is education in Ontario. The
crisis is likely to deepen as lay-offs begin this spring as a result of
the end of OAC/Grade 13. In
the 905 area we were told the crisis has somewhat different dimensions
than in the city of Toronto. In the 905 area better capital budgets have
resulted in beautiful, empty building. Buildings without adequate
textbooks, library resources, desks or other essentials. Getting ready for the 2003 Toronto
Elections. Labour Council
members unanimously endorsed Councilor David Miller as the next mayor of
Toronto. Equity Plan. Labour council members
unanimously endorsed an equity plan of action first adopted at the CLC
