Notice to Faculty / Librarians from YUFA Caucus, Joint Health and Safety Committee

13 Apr 04 - In response to an e-mail survey of YUFA members' health and safety concerns, we would like to advise you about ...

What to do if you encounter ...

Dangerous snow and ice: call ext. 22401 to report neglected areas during regular business hours, and Security Control at 22271 after hours -- an information brochure “The black and white of snow removal at York University” is available here (PDF).

Power outage etc.: call the Security emergency number (ext. 33333) to report any power failures.

Personal safety concerns in buildings and parking lots during the daytime: Contact the Department of Security, Parking and Transportation ext. 33333 (Glendon: 487-6808) Note that Security, Parking and Transportation provides transportation between the two campuses (ext. 22541), within both campuses, and to the GO Station.

Nighttime safety concerns: Contact Security / Student Escort Services ext. 33333 (Glendon: 487-6799). Nightly patrols by full-time Security Officers are complemented by 20 part-time Student Security Officers. As well, approximately 300 people per night are assisted by Student Escort Services. Also, within 15 minutes of reporting a power failure, security patrols will be dispatched to affected parking lots.

Unclean workplace (e.g., classrooms, offices): At Keele campus, contact Caretaking Services (33356). At Glendon, contact Glendon Physical Plant (88586).

Vehicles on walkways: Report any unsafe driving practices to Grounds and Vehicles ext. 22373 or / and to Security Services ext. 33333.

Poor indoor air quality: Report poor indoor air to your immediate supervisor (e.g., Dept. Chair, Dean). Further details click here (PDF).

Irritation by scented products (e.g., perfume): Discuss with your immediate supervisor (e.g., Dept. Chair, Dean). For further steps and more details click here.

Poor ergonomics: Consult Mike Papakyriakou (ext 33477 or mikepapa@yorku.ca).
Work areas and workstations can also be assessed. Further details about training sessions concerning Computer Workstations, prevention of Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI), etc.: click here.

More to come ... for example ...

The employer has promised to provide YUFA with a copy of the nighttime schedule of escorts and the route document from Security Services.

The employer will request information concerning limits on classroom occupancy from Building Code / Fire Protection for YUFA and YUFA has asked that classroom capacities be posted on the web.

The Security, Parking and Transportation Department will introduce a scheduled system for escort services, taking into consideration peak periods.

Caretaking Services will let occupants of offices know in advance the schedule of annual carpet shampooing.

Other Health and Safety concerns ...

Smoking in restricted areas: Since there are only two by-law enforcement officers at the City of Toronto, York can’t rely on much support from the municipal government. The problematic locations are the Colonnades, where smoking is permitted during summer months and banned when the windows are installed for the winter. YUFA has asked that York security be empowered to give tickets for smoking violations.

Idling more than 3 minutes: GO Transit has posted a supervisor on campus four days / week in order to ensure compliance.

Rollerblading: Rollerblading is not allowed in campus buildings or in parking lots. Isolated instances of individuals not obeying the ban are difficult to follow. There is no policy concerning Rollerblading on walkways.
