Professors Join CLC
(Ottawa - June 7, 2002) When the Canadian Labour Congress Convention opens
next week in Vancouver, history will be made as professors, academic
librarians, researchers, and other academic staff for the first time join
other union delegates as members of the country's national labour body.
The National Union of the Canadian Association of University Teachers (NUCAUT),
representing more than 10,000 academic staff at universities and colleges
in eight provinces, was admitted to the CLC earlier this year, and the
union's delegates will be on hand for their first convention next week.
NUCAUT president Maureen Shaw said faculty groups decided to join the CLC
because they want to contribute to the labour movement in Canada and they
recognize the strength of organized labour is needed in the struggle to
protect the quality and accessibility of post-secondary education.
"Our members are eager to join the fight for social justice and
workers' rights that is at the heart of the labour movement in
Canada," Shaw said.
"With the all out attack we're seeing on public post-secondary
education in many parts of the country, we also need the help of the
entire labour
movement to ensure that our universities and colleges are accessible,
affordable, and of the highest quality."
The members of NUCAUT are: Memorial University of Newfoundland Faculty
Association; University College of Cape Breton Faculty Association; Mount
Saint Vincent Faculty Association; Mount Allison Faculty
Association; Association of Professors of Bishop's University; University
of Windsor Faculty Association; York University Faculty Association;
Laurentian University Faculty Association; Carleton University Faculty
Association; Algoma University College Faculty Association; University of
Winnipeg Faculty Association; Athabasca University Faculty Association;
and the College Institute Educators' Association of British Columbia.
All local affiliates of NUCAUT are also members of the Canadian
Association of University Teachers. |
