Forum to Discuss Labour Relations at York University

27 Nov 09 - postscript to Forum meeting:

Thanks to those members who were able to attend the 20th November forum on President Shoukri’s Third Party Initiative. There were many thoughtful observations on what members believe needs to happen to reduce the likelihood of future strikes at York. It was suggested that members be able to offer written comments to the facilitator, Jim Thomas, and those who wish to do so can contact him at jimthom@yorku.ca.

A forum theme that seemed to attract interest was the discussion on what is required to create a more valued and engaged faculty. Members might offer their views to Mr. Thomas on what might best contribute to creating a more collegial relationship between YUFA and York’s management, as this also was a topic around which important observations were made.

2 Nov 09 - On 6 July, in response to last year’s campus strike, President Shoukri announced a Third Party Initiative to look into ways of reducing the likelihood of future labour disruptions at York. The initiative is being facilitated by former Deputy Minister of Labour Jim Thomas, who is seeking ideas and input from management and unions across the University. What solutions or approaches do you think the University should explore?

YUFA encourages members to attend and participate in a YUFA forum to express their ideas and engage in a discussion with Mr. Thomas. Mr. Thomas is and will continue to be reporting to President Shoukri on what he has learned and how progress can be made in addressing this most important topic.
