FAQs for YUFA Members Re: CUPE 3903 Strike by Arthur Hilliker, YUFA President & Mary Kandiuk, YUFA VP Internal 18 Nov 08
What is YUFA's position with respect to CUPE demands? YUFA supports CUPE 3903 in obtaining a fair and equitable settlement. We are engaged in discussions with CUPE 3903 regarding matters they are discussing with the Employer that would affect our Collective Agreement such as conversions and a Special Renewable Contract proposal. Both the YUFA Executive and the YUFA Stewards Council support increasing opportunities for full-time, tenure-stream teaching at York. Further, recognizing the current practice at York University of increasing contingent labour and precarious employment, both the YUFA Executive and the YUFA Stewards Council support negotiations to increase conversion opportunities at York University and, provisionally, support the resumption of Special Renewable Contracts within the YUFA membership. Any such matters affecting our Collective Agreement must be approved by the YUFA membership as an amendment to our current Collective AgreementHow is YUFA supporting CUPE 3903? YUFA has contributed $10,000 to the CUPE 3903 hardship fund. YUFA has also formed an ad hoc CUPE Support & Communications Committee which has been organizing flying pickets. Where can YUFA members find detailed information regarding CUPE 3903 demands? Detailed information regarding CUPE 3903 demands can be found on their Website. How can YUFA members contact YUFA during the strike? As is the practice during labour disruptions on campus the YUFA Office has relocated off-campus to 3100 Steeles Avenue West, 6th floor. What advice is YUFA providing to its members with respect to the strike? Senate has issued two notices on the “Suspension of Academic Activities” and “Senate Executive Notice on Course Remediation.” They are available on the Senate Website. We, YUFA, cannot advise members not to cross the picket lines. We hope that requests for off campus meetings will be collegially considered. Ongoing information is available on the YUFA Website. What actions has YUFA taken with respect to the extension of deadlines for Leaves, Fellowships? As previously announced, YUFA and the Employer have agreed to a deadline extension of December 15 for Research Development Fellowships, Teaching-Learning Development Grants and Release-Time Teaching Fellowships. What steps will YUFA be taking with respect to members concerns around remediation? Members should rest assured that YUFA is continuing to take up all member concerns during the strike. These include grievances, issues relating to restructuring and all other member concerns. How will YUFA communicate with its members during the strike? YUFA has and will continue to issue regular notices to its members via email through YUFA-M. These notices are also posted on the YUFA Website.
