Canadian Association for the Prevention
of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education (CAPDHHE) National
Conference on Race and Diversity in Higher Education 6-8 May 2008, Ottawa, ON by Didi Khayatt, YUFA Equity Officer 26 May 08 Summary of conference: This conference is mainly for practitioners such as Human Rights officers or equity officers from the various universities and colleges all across Canada. The thrust is more workshop and less analysis, with noted exceptions (sessions by Tim McCaskell and another by Dan Yon, et al). For the most part, none of the sessions were very interesting or informative for someone who has worked academically in this area for the past quarter century. I could have argued with a number of speakers (and did in some instances) about what was being said, but I mostly listened and knew that I would suggest not sending a YUFA Equity Officer, or someone who already knows the debates, to this conference. The conference was rather elementary and a perfect introduction to anyone who has been recently hired as a staff member in an equity office or for faculty who might have a burgeoning interest in social justice. It is a conference that is “hands on” and that might be useful to those who work in the area. Please contact me should you need more detailed notes on each of the sessions I attended.
