2001/02 Year End Report from Information Officer
Katherine Bischoping

All projects listed in the Executive work plan were (or are soon to be) completed:

  1. Website: Launched in September; “web news” with links to new items sent out monthly; use of site has roughly doubled over the course of the year.
  2. Members’ Handbook: This will include information about YUFA’s history & structure and answers to frequently-asked questions (FAQs) about the Collective Agreement. FAQs on topics such as salaries, parental leaves, retirement, etc. have been posted on website & advertised in web news over the year; the handbook is now being prepared for publication and should be in mailboxes by June.
  3. Active Voice: issue on “Acting affirmatively”, with guest editor Jody Warner (Equity Coordinator) appeared in April.
  4. Advertisements to Students: Ads presenting YUFA’s position on accessible education, class sizes, and equity concerns have appeared in YFS Handbook in September and in excalibur at five times in the year.
  5. Bargaining Support: Chaired subcommittee in summer 2001; produced seven fact sheets on salaries, workload, librarians’ issues, etc. and four communiqués in support of bargaining; set up email network.
  6. Member Education & Awareness: YUFA magnets sent last summer; event for new YUFA members organized in October; preparation of information packages on constitutional reform & tenure amendments; “Who will lead YUFA in 2002” booklet appeared in January.

Lots of people helped. Thanks to the academy, especially to: Penni Stewart, for making resources for the website & handbook a priority; CUPE 1281—the webkeepers without whom which; Penni, Monica Mulvihill & Oona Padgham, for thoughtful input on FAQs drafts; Monica, for drafting the complicated FAQs on grievances; nine parents in YUFA who were willing to get personal for the FAQs on leaves; Jody Warner, for a great collaboration on Active Voice; Martin Muldoon & Patti Ryan, for snappy Exec meeting summaries; Kalina Grewal, for ads in natural language; the Bargaining Support Subcommittee, particularly Harry Smaller for quick feedback; Oona for organizing the new members’ event; Martin Majoor (nice font!); and Brett Cemer, for always being something of an eagle, seeing both forest and trees.
