Executive Officers' Workplan
2006-07

11 Oct 06 - As required by YUFA By-law 9 (b), the following is the Executive Committee's workplan.

President - Arthur Hilliker

  1. Perform the duties of President as outlined in the YUFA Constitution and By-laws.

  2. Facilitate participation of YUFA members in YUFA activities by meeting with units.

  3. Continue as Chair of the All University Committee on Pensions (AUCP) and facilitate improvement of the pension plan and its administration.

  4. With Executive, provide advice and direction to the Bargaining Team negotiating the renewal Collective Agreement.

  5. Continue as Co-Chair of the Joint Committee on Teaching Load and Class Size (Article 18.14 of the Collective Agreement).

  6. Serve on the Senate as YUFA Senator.

  7. Serve as chief fiduciary officer of the Association.

  8. Chair a committee of Officers and staff to consider revisions to the Constitution and By-laws.

  9. Continue to participate in the organization of the new members’ lunches in collaboration with staff, the Vice-President Internal, and the Communications Officer and to make presentations at the lunches.

VP Internal - Joan Allen

As per the YUFA By-laws, the Vice-President Internal:

  • Assists the President in ensuring YUFA’s internal operations are running smoothly and in accordance with the Constitution and By-laws
  • Recruits members to contribute to the Association
  • Chairs YUFA’s personnel committee
  • Is a member of Executive and Stewards' Council
  • Develops and carries out priorities and projects as part of the workplan

In addition to the above-mentioned duties, the activities of the Vice-President Internal will focus on the following priorities in the coming year:

Collective Bargaining:

  • Assemble and provide support to the Bargaining Committee (with other members of Executive)
  • Assist with the collection and dissemination of information as it relates to the progress of collective bargaining (with the Communications Officer)

Association Renewal / Building Participation in YUFA:

  • Welcome, inform and reach out to new members through new faculty lunches (with other Executive members and staff)
  • Work to fill current and future vacancies on YUFA committees (with Brenda Hart)
  • As a member of JCOAA, assist with the administration and implementation of the Collective Agreement

VP External - This position is currently vacant

Chief Stewards - John Bell & Penni Stewart

The shared work of the two Chief Stewards in the coming year will include:

  1. Providing informal and formal advice to YUFA members in all contractually related matters and representing members in any meetings with the Employer.

  2. Representing members in all stages of the grievance and arbitration process.

  3. Bringing potential policy grievances to the attention of the YUFA Executive and carrying subsequent grievances forward.

  4. Organizing and chairing meetings of the Grievance Committee and Stewards’ Council. In the Coming year, John Bell will Chair Stewards’ Council.

  5. Participating in the work of the YUFA Executive and the Joint Committee on the Administration of the Agreement (JCOAA). Both Chief Stewards attend Executive and Penni Stewart will participate in JCOAA. 

  6. Providing information to members periodically through the Stewards Information webpage or otherwise. 

  7. Consulting where appropriate with the Bargaining Committee.

  8. Recruiting stewards and members of the Grievance Committee where needed.

Communications Officer - Louise Ripley

Recognizing that all scheduling this year is subordinated to Negotiating:

  1. Perform the duties of Communications Officer as outlined in the YUFA Constitution and By-laws, including:
     

    1. Writing for and soliciting and editing submissions from the membership for the YUFA Website and YUFA-M distribution;

    2. Serving on Executive Committee and Stewards’ Council;

    3. Producing a redaction of minutes of the YUFA Executive meetings;

    4. In this Negotiating year, especially as a member of the Bargaining Team, writing Bargaining Updates and other material as needed, at times as seen appropriate by the Bargaining Team and the YUFA President.
       

  2. Find ways to encourage more contributions by YUFA members to YUFA publications;

  3. Continue the past practice of Communications Officers in helping to organize and participating in YUFA’s New Faculty Lunch series;

  4. In addition to attending Executive Committee and Stewards’ Council meetings, attending YUFA General and Annual Membership Meetings and other relevant meetings;

  5. Making myself as available as possible to YUFA members / Officers / staff and others who may wish to communicate with / through me; I am always available by e-mail at lripley@yorku.ca, or I may be reached at 416-736-5236.

Equity Officers - Didi Khayatt

The Equity Officers have a rather broad mandate to make York an inclusive and a welcoming institution for all YUFA members and especially to examine the needs of those belonging to the designated equity groups. We will continue to attend the following meetings and others that fall under our portfolio:

  • Hold bi-weekly meeting (or as appropriate) with YUFA Executive Associate, Brenda Hart to prepare for Equity meetings and to discuss the ongoing projects;

  • Participate in YUFA Executive meetings twice monthly;

  • Participate in monthly Stewards' Council;

  • Participate in Race Equity, Queer, Aboriginal and Disability caucus meetings as needed, and others deemed necessary under this portfolio;

  • Meet informally with the Affirmative Action Officer for input into equity issues;

  • Respond as needed to issues that arise relating to equity e.g., Bargaining.

Narda Razack and Didi Khayatt were both re-elected in January for a second term of two years each. The new term commenced in May 2006 for both. In May 2006, Narda Razack resigned her position as Equity Officer.

Workplan:

  • Equity Audit: Motion passed in spring to hire someone to do the audit. Will follow up on this item this year.

  • Assign one Equity Officer to sit on the JCOAA meetings as required.

  • Will assist Affirmative Action Officer as required in meeting with various Search Committees.

  • Will call a New Faculty lunch to talk about Equity

  • Will assist the Bargaining Team to argue Equity issues.

Treasurer - Mary Kandiuk

The Treasurer prepares YUFA’s annual budget and financial reports, monitors YUFA’s financial position, provides financial advice regarding spending and investment matters, and participates in the work of the Executive Committee. In the 2006-07 year, I also intend to establish a protocol for the accuracy of monies received by the Association and undertake a review of YUFA’s internal accounting procedures.
