Executive Officers' work plan

2001-2002

(10 September 2001)

Background

At our Annual General Meeting (29 May 2001), YUFA members agreed to revise our Constitution and By-laws. By-law revisions included measures to produce greater accountability and transparency in the work of YUFA Officers and key committees. One such measure is an Executive Committee work plan outlined below. According to By-law F, the work plan should cover the next year. Due to the expected turnover of Officers in December 2001, the work plan below describes ongoing and key projects to be carried out by the current Officers and Executive Representatives from 1 July to 31 December 2001.

Primary Responsibility and Key Projects

Chair

  • Bargaining: A new Collective Agreement has been ratified by members on 5 September 2001.
  • Constitutional Renewal: In May 2000 a draft proposal for constitutional renewal was brought to the YUFA membership. Subsequent events including the CUPE strike overtook this initiative. This fall the Executive Committee plans to move forward with the aim of bringing a proposal to the membership for discussion and vote in October.
  • Revising Tenure and Promotion Procedures: In the 1999 collective agreement the parties agreed to revise procedures governing tenure and promotion. A steering committee struck to carry out this work is now preparing a final draft. The revised procedures will be brought to a vote of the membership this fall.

Vice Chair Organisation

  • Nominations: A campaign for key YUFA positions and a new Contract Review Committee will commence this fall.
  • Merit Pay: Initiating a discussion in the membership on Merit Pay—its impact on productivity, relationship to PTR, &c.

Vice Chair External

  • Celebrating Academic Labour: YUFA has turned 25, and in honour of this we are now planning for an event to be held next spring.
  • Local Hearings: This fall YUFA, in cooperation with the CAUT, will hold a public forum at York on the state of public education in Canada. The goal is to provide faculty, students, and local labour and community groups with the opportunity to assess the problems confronting their institutions and to suggest ways of ensuring universities and colleges can fulfill their public mission. This event is part of a series of cross-country hearings on the state of post-secondary education in Canada that the CAUT is organizing with local faculty associations.

Information Officer

  • Members’ Handbook: As part of a campaign on member education, FAQs and information for new and continuing members will be published this year.
  • Website: YUFA’s all new website will be “launched” early this fall. Website development and promotion will continue into the next year.
  • YFS Handbook and Excalibur advertising campaign: YUFA will be purchasing space for a campaign directed to raising students’ awareness on key issues in post-secondary education.
  • A special edition of Active Voice on “Moving YUFA beyond Whiteness” will be published this fall.
  • Member Education and Awareness: As part of the ongoing communication strategy, fridge magnets advertising YUFA were sent to members in August.

Chief Steward

  • Pursuit of member grievances, complaints, mediation and arbitration.
  • Building community: In a campaign to build community and educate members, the Contract and Grievance Committee will launch two projects: reactivating the Stewards’ network and initiating contact with recently appointed YUFA members.
  • Education in grievance work and issues for Chief Stewards and Stewards.

Equity Co-ordinator

  • Caucuses: As part of an initiative to increase YUFA’s inclusivity, the YUFA Equity Committee is helping launch a queer caucus and a caucus for people of colour.
  • Task Force: The Equity Co-ordinator will sit as the YUFA Representative on the Inclusivity & Diversity Task Force mandated in the new collective agreement.
  • Fair Employment Week: In conjunction with CAUT, the Equity Committee will be participating in a campaign to raise awareness of working conditions and other issues affecting contract faculty.
  • Diversity and the Curriculum: Building on projects in Canada and elsewhere, the Equity Committee will design an educational project to assist YUFA members wanting to create inclusive curricula.
