Tracking Workload

12 Jun 03 - YUFA members have expressed concerns about growing workloads in bargaining priority and workload questionnaires. The Bargaining Priorities questionnaire found that sixty-eight percent of our members who have been teaching at York for more than five years indicated that workload had increased in that time. Just one percent said it had decreased over the same period while the remaining members indicated that work had stayed about the same. Sixty percent of members indicated that email from students has significantly increased their teaching load.

The Grievance Committee needs information from members about changes in workload practices. YUFA is assembling information from across the university about the relationship between budget cuts and changes in work practices.

Members who have experienced increases in their normal workload are asked to email one of the chief stewards with specific information about how their workload has increased and how these changes came about.

The makeup of expected workloads for YUFA members varies considerably across units and departments and is reflected in written and unwritten expectations about teaching, supervision and service.

Workload may increase for any of the following reasons:

  • Increased class sizes

  • Increased grading responsibilities

  • Increased TA or marker/grader supervisory responsibilities

  • Increased graduate supervision

  • The conversion of courses to web-based courses

  • Weekend teaching

  • Increased email contact with students

  • Decreasing staff or technical support within your unit

  • Increased time spent checking on plagiarism

  • Travel to offsite campuses

  • Proliferating committee work

  • Fewer members doing committee work

  • Cancellation of small enrollment courses

  • Increased laboratory and tutorial work

  • Etc.

All responses will be treated anonymously and confidentially unless otherwise indicated by members.  PLEASE RESPOND TO ELLIE PERKINS (ESPERK@YORKU.CA) OR JOHN BELL (JOHNBELL@YORKU.CA).
