YUFA Member Solicits Recollections of 1997 YUFA Strike

7 Apr 05 - Louise Ripley of Atkinson Administrative Studies / Women's Studies / FES has requested YUFA members to send their memories of the 1997 strike to her (at
lripley@yorku.ca).

As Professor Ripley has written:

At a time when grey skies, chill damp and lingering snow still cry out, "Strike Weather!" I write to ask YUFA members a favour.

I am on sabbatical and working on a book about the 1997 YUFA strike using all original e-mails from the YUFA-L (only those I sent - you won't be
getting a request for permission to use your words).

What I would appreciate receiving from interested YUFA members is a list of the top 3 (4, or 5) things you remember about the strike, good or bad, happy or sad, enlightening or frightening, momentous or small, things that were important to you, that made an impression, that made a difference. These might be things that, if you were reading a book someone had written about
the strike and the YUFA-L communications medium and you found it wasn't there, you'd shout, "How the hell could anyone write about the strike and YUFA-L and not mention "X"?!" Or it might be something that was individually personal to you, but might match experiences shared by others.

I cannot guarantee I'll use everything; I am committed to using only original YUFA-L postings as much as possible. A major purpose of my asking for input is to be sure that I have not left out anything major (we are talking 8-year-old memories and an incomplete collection of YUFA-L messages). But I'm also seeking to sift through the memories of my friends who were out there eight years ago.

For someone who often cannot list all the members of my own department by name, it still fills me with awe and a deep warmth that, seeking to make a list of those of you with whom I walked the picket lines (literally or figuratively), I could list more than 80 without even thinking very hard. It
reminds me of the stories in the popular press about some movie star who "dined out last evening with a small circle of her 80 most intimate
friends"! I remain amazed at the level of camaraderie and friendship that the strike generated. I am looking to capture something of that in the book.

Don't spend a lot of time on this; give me your first reactions, and please if you can, reply within a month. Send your responses to lripley@yorku.ca.

By sending these to me, you will automatically be giving me permission to use anything in the book; I will not be sending any further requests for permission to use material.

With thanks in advance for your help,

Louise Ripley
