24 Nov 05 - This week you will receive in your mail box a copy of OCUFA's new publication, Academic Matters: The Journal of Higher Education.
The journal's mandate is to explore issues of relevance to higher education in Ontario, in Canada in general, and globally. It is intended to be a forum for thoughtful and thought-provoking, original and engaging discussion of current trends in postsecondary education and consideration of academe's future direction. In our inaugural issue, we focus on perceptions of higher education. The issue is anchored on a lead article by Canada Research Chair David Livingstone and his colleague Doug Hart (OISE). They delve into a treasure trove of exclusive data they have mined over the years to explore public perceptions of Canada's universities. The first issue also features a debate on the merits and morality of ranking universities in Canada -- featuring none other than Maclean's editor Ann Dowsett Johnston, coming to the defense of her magazine's annual ranking of Canadian universities, and University of Windsor Professors Stewart Page and Kenneth Cramer, who question the morality of university rankings.
In order to improve the journal, we need your feedback. We are asking that you fill out a reader survey which will tell us how you feel about the look, layout and editorial content of Academic Matters, and whether you find the journal enjoyable and relevant.
The survey also asks about your academic and personal interests. This will allow us to approach companies and organizations that may want to advertise products and services in which you may have an interest. All individual survey responses will be kept strictly confidential and used only to develop a general reader profile and will not be shared with any third party.
