How to be a YUFA Steward

6 Oct 04

Stewards’ responsibilities in their units:

  • Inform members of issues and information from the monthly Stewards’ Council meetings

  • Assist members to access information about work at York University

  • Provide officers and staff with information as requested, e.g., Workload data

  • Report formally or informally to their units on a regular basis

  • Assist members to resolve problems on an informal, collegial basis

  • Refer members to YUFA staff for assistance

  • Treat all matters brought by members as confidential

  • Read the Collective Agreement and Members Handbook

In summary, the unit steward functions in a collegial manner and is not expected to initiate grievances or complaints with the Employer.  That function falls to the Chief Stewards.  If you have any questions about how to handle a problem, please contact the YUFA office for assistance.

Stewards’ responsibilities within the Stewards’ Council:

  • Come prepared for discussion of the agenda issues; collect data from unit if needed

  • Bring forward issues of concern or interest to other Stewards

  • Share solutions to common problems

  • Approve Executive work plans and other matters as outlined in the YUFA Constitution

  • Participate in Contract Renewal Discussions

  • Advise Executive on matters of concern to YUFA members
