to be a YUFA Steward

Stewards’
responsibilities in their units:
-
Inform members of issues and information from
the monthly Stewards’ Council meetings
-
Assist members to access information about work at York University
-
Provide officers and staff with information as requested, e.g., Workload
data
-
Report formally or informally to their units on a regular basis
-
Assist members to resolve problems on an informal, collegial basis
-
Refer members to YUFA staff for assistance
-
Treat all matters brought by members as confidential
-
Read the Collective Agreement and Members Handbook
In summary, the unit steward functions in a
collegial manner and is not expected to initiate grievances or complaints
with the Employer. That function falls to the Chief Stewards.
If you have any questions about how to handle a problem, please contact
the YUFA office for assistance.
Stewards’
responsibilities within the Stewards’ Council:

Come prepared for discussion of the agenda
issues; collect data from unit if needed

Bring forward issues of concern or interest to other Stewards
-
Share solutions to common problems
-
Approve Executive work plans and other matters as outlined in the YUFA
Constitution
-
Participate in Contract Renewal Discussions
-
Advise Executive on matters of concern to YUFA members
