YUFA Equity Officers Host Meeting on Mandatory Retirement

15 Sep 04 - On September 1, 2004 interested YUFA members met to discuss their views on 'Mandatory Retirement' (MR) and to make recommendations to the YUFA Executive. The main points discussed were:

  • Abolition of mandatory retirement
  • 'Flexible retirement' – various interpretations;
  • Implications for pensions and other Collective Agreement provisions in the next round of bargaining;
  • SRC concerns;
  • Abolition of MR as a human rights issue, i.e., ageism;
  • Abolition of MR as an equity issue – different groups may be affected differently;
  • Abolition of MR as an inclusivity issue.

Recommendations to the YUFA Executive:

  • Post OCUFA’s position paper on MR at the YUFA website;
  • Post articles and other reports at the YUFA website;
  • Contact CAUT for their papers / information on MR;
  • Let membership know the position of the YUFA Executive regarding:
    • the possibility of making a presentation to the consultation team;
    • discussions with the administration of York;
    • endorsement of the OCUFA position.
  • Explore the potential impact of changes regarding: bargaining (via the Contract Review Committee);
  • Create a retirement discussion forum on the YUFA website;
  • Get further information on COU’s position;
  • Summarize the history of YUFA’s responses / positions on MR;
  • Identify the pension working group as a sounding board for a proposal concerning MR;
  • Ensure the pension working group is representative of all groups;
  • Consult other unions via the all unions at York listserv.

Some questions:

  • Should YUFA support OCUFA’s position?
  • How should YUFA respond to government discussions?
  • What are the potential impacts on collective bargaining?
  • What are the real financial implications of MR? YUFA needs fiscal expertise to respond to the Employer on this issue.

In the meantime MR was discussed at the YUFA Executive meeting on September 13, 2004. The YUFA office will be distributing more information as it arrives. Meanwhile, YUFA members are reminded that they are welcome to join YUFA's working group on pensions and its listserv pensiongroup@yorku.ca by contacting the YUFA office at yufa@yorku.ca or 416 736 5236.
