Legislation to End Mandatory Retirement Introduced

29 May 03 - The Ernie Eves Government moved today to end mandatory retirement at age 65. This sudden move was surprising given that the Conservatives are promising to eliminate mandatory retirement as part of their campaign platform.

Speaking at the introduction of the bill, Minister of Citizenship, Carl DeFaria, said, "If passed, the bill would come into effect on January 1, 2005. However, mandatory retirement provisions in collective agreements that are in effect on the date of introduction of this bill, May 29, 2003, would remain in force until the collective agreement expires."

Introduction of a bill into the Legislature does not guarantee passage and there is a strong possibility that the Act will not be passed into law before the general election due within the next year.

YUFA will be exploring with the Employer what this legislation may mean for the Collective Agreement.
