What to do About Weekend Exams

The Registrar has posted an exam schedule for Fall 2002 that includes weekends.

This schedule is in violation of the YUFA Collective Agreement and of an additional grievance settlement with YUFA signed in June regarding the Winter 2002 exam schedule. It will also cause YUFA members a significant amount of extra work. Therefore, YUFA will grieve the exam schedule again.

In the meantime, what advice does YUFA offer to members?

  • First, if you are opposed to weekend exams, let your voice be heard. Email your Dean/Principal and the VP Academic (embleton@yorku.ca).
  • Second, inform your undergraduate programme director that you wish to have your weekend exams rescheduled.
  • Third, if you are unable to conduct a weekend exam because of your religious beliefs, you have the right to have your exams rescheduled.

This is an important issue. The Employer is removing the past practice that scheduled teaching activities ordinarily take place Monday through Friday, with exceptions only at members' discretion or for extraordinary circumstances. YUFA believes that members ought to have a choice about teaching on weekends, and that the assignment of teaching duties over a seven-day week ought not to be taken for granted by our Employer. YUFA hopes to again raise this issue in collective bargaining next year.
