Tenure & promotions ratification ...
What’s new … highlights of changes
Greater transparency
- standards and criteria to be articulated by
departments and faculties and reviewed by Senate
- standards and criteria are to be given to
candidates at the time of appointment and again, in writing, when they
move from precandidacy to candidacy
- procedures for candidates who are jointly or
cross-appointed are clarified
- material to be included in the file is more
clearly specified; candidates’ rights to review materials and add to
the file are made explicit
- the process of “gisting” letters of reference
is replaced by masking referees’ identities and the provision
otherwise of the full text of letters to the candidate. Referees shall
be informed of this practice.
- adjudicators are encouraged not to vote for “delay”
if they believe that the candidate is likely to meet the standard
within the coming year
Greater equity
- recognition is given to acknowledging the
diversity of career paths, ways of knowing, traditions and values in
file preparation
- recognition is given to the importance of
temporal equity in tenure and promotion evaluations
- candidates are entitled to name one member of the
three-person file preparation committee
- candidates for promotion to full professor may
appeal delay decisions
Greater timeliness
- fewer letters of reference are encouraged
especially in the area of professional competence
- the process is streamlined with the result that
the Senate committee no longer reviews the file de novo, but ensures
that the recommendation of the adjudicating committee has applied
criteria fairly and is in accord with university standards
