National Union names interim Officers, plans Convention

They're from Cape Breton, Windsor, and Vancouver - from a college, a university college, and a comprehensive university. The newly-selected interim national leadership of CAUT's National Union (NUCAUT) won't be having many face-to-face meetings, but they do reflect Canada's regions and the range of local unions who are members of NUCAUT.

Interim President Maureen Shaw is President of the College Institute Educators' Association of BC (CIEABC), the 6000-member provincial union of BC's college faculty and NUCAUT's largest component.

Shaw's experience at the head of a provincial union and on the Executive Council of BC's Federation of Labour gives her unique qualifications to lead NUCAUT.

"I understand the professional concerns of NUCAUT members," says Shaw, "and the need for union protection for the betterment of post secondary educators and their work. One of my strengths is in coalition building: with other unions and with students, especially the Canadian Federation of Students."

NUCAUT's Interim Vice President is Brian Brown, President of the Windsor University Faculty Association (WUFA). He teaches Visual Arts. During Brown's twenty years of activism in WUFA, he has been on five bargaining teams. He is currently OCUFA Treasurer.

Finally, Interim Treasurer Don MacGillivray teaches labour history and is Past President of the Faculty Association of University Teachers of the University College of Cape Breton (FAUTUCCB). He has served on the FAUTUCCB Executive for 14 years, including two terms as President. He was one of the organizers of FAUTUCCB's strike in the winter of 2000.

The three interim Officers, who along with Executive Director James Turk comprise the Union's national Executive Board, were selected during a conference call on 16 January.

The National Union, YUFA's new formal link to the Canadian labour movement, is now set to lay the groundwork for its founding Convention in June. The first of its triennial conventions will take place in Vancouver on 8-9 June, immediately prior to this year's Canadian Labour Congress Convention. CIEABC will host the meeting.

YUFA will soon name its delegates to the NUCAUT Convention, along with its first delegation to the Canadian Labour Congress.
