Election update ...
Five Officer nominees await
ratification Two positions - Vice President Internal and Equity Officer - remain vacant. The nominees are now subject to a ballot of the membership. According to YUFA's new Officer election rules, a ratification vote must be conducted where there is only one candidate for a position. The 2002-04 Officers will lead the union through a re-negotiation of the collective agreement and the transition to YUFA's new constitutional structure. Susan Dimock, a member in the Arts Philosophy department currently serving a 5-month term as Vice Chair Organisation and Acting Chair, stands for President. "The changes to the internal operations and structure of the Association, together with a superb staff, will allow me to focus on issues of concern to YUFA members within the university more broadly," Dimock said in a statement to Executive. "One of my highest priorities for the next two years as President will be to work at improving labour relations between YUFA and the Employer," she said. Her other priorities will be issues arising from workload increases, technological change, and faculty recruitment and retention. In addition to Dimock, nominees include John Bell and Ellie Perkins for the two Chief Steward positions. Perkins, from Environmental Studies, has served YUFA in many capacities, including as a steward, negotiator, and Executive Representative. Bell is a co-chair of YUFA's Contract & Grievance Committee and a faculty member in the School of Arts & Letters of Atkinson College. Perkins and Bell will be responsible for setting in
motion YUFA's new Stewards' Council, as well as putting their mark on the
other expanded responsibilities of the Chief Stewards. Rounding out the list of nominations received to date are Robert Macdermid for Communications Officer and Nick Lary for Vice President External. Macdermid is a veteran member of joint YUFA-Employer committees. Nick Lary of Arts Humanities has served YUFA in many capacities over the years, including Information Officer and member of the Contract & Grievance Committee.
