Stewards' Council Holds Inaugural Meeting

Notes from the meeting of 4 October '02

10 Oct 02 - YUFA's new Stewards' Council met for the first time on the 4th of October. More than 20 stewards, officers, and staff were present.

Increasing the membership of the Council by filling continuing vacancies was discussed.

The need for members for a YORK/YUFA Health and Safety Committee was discussed and stewards were requested to submit nominations to J. Rahn.  Any member of YUFA is eligible.

Attention was brought to the CLC Ontario Region Winter School and application from amongst stewards to YUFA for attendance invited.

A questionnaire on class size/room space was distributed.  Stewards are asked to distribute the questionnaires to unit YUFA colleagues.

The Council discussed YUFA's jurisdiction over the terms & conditions of members teaching non-credit courses. It was agreed that this was a complex issue which merited further study before any action is taken on the part of YUFA.

Ongoing concerns were raised about the requirements to provide a report on "outside activities" and to provide a curriculum vitae, including fair use of CVs, the scope of "outside activities", and the nuances of the language of Article 18.04 of the 2001-03 Collective Agreement.

As well, various issues surrounding Academic Freedom were discussed.

In a general discussion parking (including safety and the possibility of parking near a lecture room in the evening), merit and workload concerns (especially in the light of the double cohort) were raised as important bargaining issues.

Finally, the Council considered routine reviews, approvals and appointments:

  • It was moved by L. Sanders and seconded by Keith Aldridge that the Executive Committee appointments provided in Attachment 7 of the Agenda of this meeting be ratified by Stewards' Council.  The motion passed.
  • The YUFA Executive Committee Work plan for 2002/2003 was distributed and will be considered for approval at the next meeting of Stewards' Council.
  • Volunteers were invited from amongst the stewards for appointment to the Executive Committee (Council is entitled to 2 representatives).
