Leadership in place for 2002-04

23 May 02 - With YUFA Officers' terms set to begin in one week, the two vacancies left after the General Election are now filled for 2002-04.

Elected to the vacant positions in the recent by-election are Jay Rahn for VP Internal and Jody Nyasha Warner for Equity Officer.

Jay (Arts & Letters, Atkinson) has been at York since 1978 as everything from a sessional to CLA to Associate Professor. He brings YUFA experience acquired as a member of the Joint Sub-committee on the Impact of Technology, the Contract Review Committee, and the Sub-committee on Student Electronic Contact.

Jay is particularly concerned with the double cohort, which he believes is the most momentous issue confronting York's full-time faculty and librarians. He is especially interested in contributing to an effective YUFA response that is "framed in terms of such long-established ideas as workload, salary, equity, planning & governance, and pension & retirement provisions."

Jody (Libraries) is a "Reference librarian at Scott library /anti-oppression activist / mixed-race Black woman / mother / YUFA member!" She was Chair of the YUFA Equity Committee last year and wishes to continue as Equity Officer because there are a number of initiatives started this year she would like to see through. In addition, she points out, next year "will be a critical year since contract negotiations will take place and I hope to ensure equity has a central place in our bargaining positions."

Officers previously elected for 2002-04 are:

  • President - Susan Dimock (Philosophy, Arts)
  • Vice President External - Nick Lary (Humanities, Arts)
  • Treasurer - Perry Sadorsky (Schulich)
  • Chief Steward - Ellie Perkins (Environmental Studies)
  • Chief Steward - John Bell (Arts & Letters, Atkinson)
  • Communications Officer - Robert MacDermid (Political Science, Arts)
  • Recording Secretary - Arthur Hilliker (Biology)

The Officers are joined on YUFA's Executive by Past President Penni Stewart (Sociology, Arts), Association of Retired Faculty & Librarians representative Margaret Knittl, two unit stewards to be named later, and YUFA's professional staff.
