20 members receive YUFA academic awards

Congratulations to 20 YUFA members recently awarded grants and course reductions in this year's YUFA awards competition! The recipients will be pursuing teaching & learning development or study projects. 

"There are lots of exciting things going on at York," said Amin Mawani (Schulich), one of the members of the YUFA-Management joint committee that adjudicated the applications. Greg Malszecki (Kinesiology & Health Science), also of the committee, said, "Looking at these applications, I'm honestly in awe of the ideas and forward thinking represented in the proposed projects, and of the accomplishments and efforts of the applicants."

Teaching & Learning Development grants were awarded for five projects:

  • Dawn Bazely, Norman Yan, Paula Wilson, Bridget Stutchbury, Brock Fenton, Laurence Packer and Joel Shore plan to enhance the Biology Department's ecology curriculum in "The whole is greater than the sum of the parts" ($4000)
  • Nicholas Elson (DLLL) & Carol Fraser (Glendon/English) will be selecting and evaluating software to support individualized learning by students from English as a second language backgrounds ($2500)
  • Andrea O'Reilly (School of Women's Studies), Rishma Dunlop (Education) and Gail Lindsay (Nursing) will convene a conference on "Mothering and Teaching in the Academe" this May ($4000)
  • Chi-Kang Peng & David Scadding (Design), aim to make a slide library more accessible by digitizing it for a project called "Design Education and Education Design" ($5000)
  • Patrick Solomon (Education) will analyse and assess "Community Involvement: A Community Learning Approach to Teacher Education" ($2500)

and three YUFA members received Release-Time Teaching Fellowships:

  • Joan Gibson (Atkinson/Arts & Letters) to develop a non-degree certificate programme for students who are dual-diagnosed (1.0 course release)
  • Sam Mallin (Analytic Studies & Information Technology) to prepare a conceptual analysis text for Atkinson's Modes of Reasoning course (1.0 course release)
  • John Spencer (Centre for Academic Writing) to research "Teaching Writing Using Computers" (1.5 course release)

Elizabeth Watson (Library), a member of the adjudicating committee, said: "I am looking forward to seeing the results of these innovative projects reported in CORE and other venues."

Finally, two Educational Leaves were granted to:

  • Karen Bowes-Sewell (Dance), to complete the final two years of a Feldenkrais Practitioner programme (2.0 course release)
  • Barbara Hanson (Atkinson/Social Sciences), to attend a first year of law school in a project called "Legal Studies and Social Challenges" (2.5 course release)
