Members back constitutional renewalGeneral Meeting of 5 December 2001 YUFA members voted overwhelmingly to adopt the new internal structure and rules proposed by the Executive Committee in October. Members packed the Faculty Club on the 5th of December to participate in the discussion and vote. The new Constitution represents the first comprehensive revision of YUFA's primary document since it was adopted in 1962. The main features of the amendments include a governing stewards council with representatives from most units across the University, a new system of unit stewards, replacement of the existing standing committee structures with ad hoc sub-committees, and a new Executive Committee of Officers responsible for all aspects of day-to-day union operations. The changes take effect on the 1st of June 2002. "The process of bringing this renewal to fruition has been really interesting," said Penni Stewart, Acting Chair. "The two years we've spent discussing the problems and these proposals with members have been valuable in themselves. And of course the proposals have been greatly improved by members' input. "I'm very pleased that members have understood and embraced what we're trying to do. I look forward to the even bigger challenge rebuilding the Association in the ways the new structure allows us to do," said Stewart. For more details, follow the following links:
