Urgent Plea: Mulatu Mekonen, exiled Ethiopian teachers' union leader

Two years ago at the CAUT council, there was a harrowing account of ongoing harassment and death threats against Mulatu Mekonen, the (Acting) General Secretary of the Ethiopian Teachers Association. Mr. Mekonen was eventually forced to flee Ethiopia, leaving his family behind. With CAUT's assistance, Mr. Mekonen came to Canada. He has been granted refugee status and hopes to begin graduate studies in education at OISE this fall. Mr. Mekonen has beenseeking employment for several months, but to date he has not been able to find a job. The situation is now quite dire. CAUT has been supporting him, but that support will end at the end of this month.

Mr. Mekonen was a high school biology teacher in Ethiopia. A job in a labor in some research capacity would be ideal, but he is willing to take on any kind of work. We hope that our members might know of a job possibility for Mr. Mekonnen, or have suggestions that we could follow up on (yufa@yorku.ca). The employment need not be long term.
