Survey Analyses Delays and Barriers to Faculty Members' Career Progress

Preface

The following report contains a descriptive analysis of the responses to open-ended questions in the employment equity survey of faculty conducted in 2000. The survey was the first comprehensive update in ten years, and was intended primarily to ensure that data, particularly about the representation of people with disabilities, were accurate and up-to-date. A summary of the numerical data can be found in the Centre for Human Rights and Equity's report for 1997-2000 on the Centre's website: www.yorku.ca/chrey. A secondary purpose of the survey was to collect information about possible delays and barriers to career progress. A small number of open-ended questions provided space for very brief answers, which were then analysed by Darla Rhyne of the Institute for Social Research. Darla's report, together with numerical data incorporating the responses from faculty hired since September 2000, will inform the thinking this year of the JCOAA sub-committee on employment equity, and will also be available to the new task force on inclusivity and diversity.
