YUFA founds Jane-Finch Community Bursary, challenges members to contribute

YUFA has initiated a bursary fund for students from the Jane-Finch community to celebrate the 25th anniversary of certification as a union.

"We're doing this in order to build bridges between YUFA and the surrounding community. It's part of our civic responsibility as a public university," said Lorna Erwin, YUFA Vice Chair External.

"Jane-Finch is a community with a disproportionate number of high school students who can't afford to go on to university. This is an accessibility issue."

The fund was established in October with a $5000 donation from YUFA. Several YUFA members have already made donations, some from their merit pay. In order for the bursary to continue from year to year, the fund must contain at least $10 000.

YUFA is challenging members to give generously - for the students who will benefit, and in celebration of 25 years of collective bargaining gains.

"Given the enthusiastic early response," said Erwin, "we are hopeful that we will be able to raise much more than the minimum $10 000."

Donations to the bursary fund are tax-deductible. In addition, contributors to the bursary will be recognized publicly in March 2002, when YUFA and CAUT, with other members of the York and Jane-Finch communities, will host a forum on the state of public education.
