Grievance Settled – Atkinson On-Campus Meetings for Internet Courses

23 Mar 04 - On December 5, 2003, YUFA filed a grievance regarding the Employer’s requirement that all on-campus meetings of Internet courses in the Atkinson Faculty of Liberal and Professional Studies must take place only during the time period of Friday afternoon, Saturday and Sunday. YUFA argued that this was a change in practice. The Employer, on the other hand, maintained that many such meetings have taken place on weekends for some time. In addition, the Employer maintained that scheduling meetings for Internet courses during the regular Monday-to-Thursday Atkinson evening time slots led to potential course-meeting conflicts for students enrolled in both Internet courses and on-campus Atkinson courses.

YUFA and the Employer reached an agreement that includes the following. On-campus meetings for Internet courses will normally be scheduled through the appropriate University office prior to the start of the academic session, in which the courses are offered, using the Friday evening to Sunday time period. However, an instructor may, with unanimous consent of the class, reschedule an on-campus session for an Internet course at a time during the regular Monday-to-Thursday evening class schedule, provided that the rescheduling is done within the first three weeks of the start of the term.
