Readers to Leaders

28 Nov 11 (posted date) - Students participate in an intensive literacy skills development program for one week during August and subsequently every Saturday from October until March, in order to help them achieve academic success and pass the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test (OSSLT). The program targets students who have previously failed the OSSLT, or who have been assessed as at serious risk of failing it due to weak literacy skills. The program provides students with direct instruction in reading strategies, writing skills, questioning techniques, test-taking tips, and vocabulary acquisition. Students examine print, electronic and media texts from a variety of academic content areas and other sources in a structured supportive environment in which critical thinking and risk-taking are encouraged.
