Proposal to YUFA Executive to Establish a Community Projects Committee

8 Nov 04 (posted 23 Apr 09) - Proposal To YUFA Executive To Establish A Community Projects Committee

  1. For the past three years an ad hoc group of YUFA members has worked to develop and initiate a number of community-University education projects (academic support, enrichment, adult / community education, advocacy research), mainly in the Jane-Finch area. Given the successes of these projects to date, it is our hope that a structure could now be initiated, responsible to the Executive, which would provide some overview, rationale and continuity to these kinds of activities - both relating to specific communities, as well as supporting comparative or collaborative research / development projects between two or more communities.

  2. Based on our success in establishing the ACE (Advanced Credit Experience) project, it is clear that external funds are available for community-University education projects, and it is our belief that identifying a legitimate, responsible coordinating body will assist greatly in our search for further funding from foundations, community organizations, other unions, etc.

  3. The existence of such a committee active within the University, will do much to encourage other campus entities - not least, the University Administration itself - to become more proactive in community-University affairs.

  4. Establishing such a committee will further our attempts to respond substantively to the very serious concerns and requests voiced by the 100 community residents who attended the YUFA / CAUT community consultation meeting held at the Driftwood Community Centre some two years ago.

  5. Finally, the existence of such a committee will do much to enhance YUFA as having a strong "social union" component, concerned about the larger University community, along with YUFA's other traditional responsibilities to its members.

Proposal: Creation of a YUFA "Community Projects" Standing Committee under Article 7.1 of the YUFA Constitution.

Purpose: This standing YUFA committee would serve two main purposes - first, to signal YUFA members' concern about issues of University access for the children of minority and working-class families in Toronto, particularly those in the Jane-Finch area neighbouring York's Keele campus, and to assist this access with joint projects within the community; second, to assist in the provision of financial and other support for research and development projects which have been initiated collaboratively by York faculty members and librarians and the relevant community.

Mandate:

  1. To consult with community agencies and organizations

  2. To develop project proposals and recommend them to YUFA Executive; all such projects must include community representation within their coordinating / governing structures

  3. To consider other project proposals for recommendation to YUFA Executive

  4. To administer or overview projects being undertaken

  5. To assist in the development of projects by engaging in additional fundraising within the York community

  6. To work with YUFA Foundation and York University to administer scholarships

  7. To work with organizations on and off campus to facilitate administration of project budgets

  8. To report formally to YUFA Executive annually

  9. To ensure that both the York community and the Jane-Finch community are kept informed of the activities of this committee

Membership:

Up to 10 interested YUFA members, approved by the Executive.

Meetings:

Committee meetings – monthly from Sept. to April, as needed in summer

Community consultations – at least 1 or 2 per year
