YUFA-CP Community Meeting
PEACH, 95 Eddystone Avenue, Unit 2
22 March 2011 ~ 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Participants

YUFA-CP, San Romanoway Family Center, Success Beyond Limits, The Spot, PEACH, Black Creek Community Health Center

Synopsis

While the needs, structure, and funding of each of the community groups were diverse, there were many common themes and consensus around how YUFA-CP can work collaboratively with these groups to increase coordination of community organizations, increase consistency and continuity of relationships, decrease overlap, and ensure that we are differentiated from the University in our efforts.

A recommendation to consider alignment of future partnerships within a community-based social determinants framework that is consistent with funding organizations such as the United Way Community of Practice was also made. At the end of the meeting, it was agreed that after further discussion, a follow-up meeting would be planned for May (to ensure broader community representation and to plan for next steps). To this end, Marilyn Eisenstat (PEACH) circulated a community collaborative summer program proposal for our review.

Themes / Collaborative Opportunities

  1. Student Placement Opportunities (Success Beyond Limits and San Romanoway): need for continuity (and funding) of teacher assistants / volunteers for homework tutoring, particularly during gap periods of exams and in the summer.

  2. Administration Workshops / assistance with post-secondary applications and TOEFL-type exams: need for support in preparing for TOEFL exams, course prep textbooks, and support for application and exam fees. A need for guidance counselor / the Registrar's Office to provide informational workshops about what program options are available, and the pathways to these programs and/or careers.

  3. Organization of a workshop on the impact of discrimination on access to education.

  4. Small group workshop / training opportunities in CPR, anti-oppression, etc.

  5. Workshops on program evaluation and 'impact'.

  6. Collaborative / inter-agency projects: a need for collaborative youth summer programming to bridge the education gap through the summer.

YUFA Meeting To Discuss The Creation Of A YUFA-Jane-Finch Community Partnership

9 May 2002, 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm, YUFA Meeting Room

Background

The impetus for this initiative was the success of the 7 March Local Hearing on Public Education that was hosted by the York University Faculty Association (YUFA) at the Driftwood Community Centre. The response from Jane-Finch residents has been tremendous. More than 100 community representatives attended the hearing. In the follow-up questionnaire, the participants identified a number of issues that a partnership could work together on; indicated overwhelming support for the development of a partnership; and suggested that there were a number of residents, community leaders, and teachers who would like to get involved.

We believe that a partnership between the community and YUFA is an important and worthwhile project. Hence, we are inviting faculty and librarians who have indicated an interest in such an initiative to the meeting on 9 May. Representatives from the Westview Alumni at York (WAY) have also been invited.

The meeting will be small, and, we hope, very productive. In large part, it will be a brainstorming session; we need your ideas and suggestions on how to move ahead. We also need an indication of YUFA members' interest and support.

There have been a number of successful University-community partnerships in the United States that have strongly benefited both the local community and the campus community. We hope that you share our enthusiasm and will get involved.

Please RSVP to Lorna Erwin by 1 May (lerwin@York.ca; ext. 33913).
